Understanding Life Transitions

Change is an inevitable part of life, but that doesn’t mean it is always easy.

Even positive transitions can bring uncertainty, stress, grief, and questions about identity or purpose. Feeling unsettled during a transition does not mean that something is wrong with you. This sense is rooted in our biology as our nervous system moves to an activated state.

You may know exactly what is changing, or you may simply have a feeling that your current life no longer fits who you are becoming. Therapy can provide a space to slow down, reflect, and make sense of where you are. Together, you can explore what you want, what matters to you, and how you would like to move forward.

Life Transitions May Include:

  • Starting or ending a relationship
  • Marriage
  • Separation or divorce
  • Becoming a parent
  • Children leaving home
  • Career changes
  • Retirement
  • Relocation
  • Immigration or cultural adjustment
  • Graduation
  • Financial changes
  • Changes in family roles
  • Aging and changing responsibilities
  • Major health-related changes
  • Entering a new stage of life
  • Questions about identity, purpose, or direction

You May Feel:

  • Uncertain about the future
  • Overwhelmed by change
  • Lost or disconnected
  • Anxious about making the “right” decision
  • Sad about what you’re leaving behind
  • Stuck between two chapters
  • Pressured by expectations
  • Unsure what you want
  • Disconnected from your sense of identity
  • Searching for greater meaning or direction

In therapy we can be curious, challenge core beliefs, and learn new skills to help adapt to the changing circumstances we experience in life.
