Courtney SPENCE, MACP, RP, SPT, EMDR Therapist
Owner of Holding Moments Psychotherapy
Registered Psychotherapist Certified Synergetic Play Therapist
EMDR Trained Therapist
Courtney is passionate about working with children, youth, and adults, and has completed specialized training in both Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Synergetic Play Therapy (SPT). Working from a psychodynamic, attachment-theory, and person-centered lens, Courtney remains committed to being flexible in her treatment approach for her clients. Whether it’s trauma/stress related, mood disorders, PTSD, grief/loss, anxiety, depression, life-transitions, or other life stressors, Courtney recognizes that each client brings with them their own personal experiences. With this in mind, Courtney works to incorporate a variety of therapeutic elements and techniques to individualize and personalize the therapy journey. Courtney is committed to creating a non-judgmental, and compassionate therapeutic space for her clients to exercise their authenticity and autonomy. Viewing her role as an opportunity to accompany her clients on their journey of healing and self-discovery, she works to help her clients explore their own past and present experiences, while also helping them identify underlying emotions, breaking down barriers, and identifying unhelpful patterns and attachments in their life.
Courtney holds an M.A. in Counselling Psychology and a B.A. (Hons) in Criminology and Justice Studies, and brings with her a wealth of knowledge and experience from various organizations within the broader public sector. Courtney recognizes the importance of community involvement and has volunteered with emergency services and with Durham Girls Inc.
Outside of work Courtney enjoys spending time with her family, which includes a fluffy goldendoodle named Murdoch. She also enjoys going to the gym, running, camping, and curling up with good book, preferably a mystery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Starting therapy can come with a lot of questions. You may be wondering what to expect, how often you’ll need to come, or whether therapy is even right for you. We’ve gathered some of the questions we hear most often to help you feel a little more comfortable taking that first step.
How do I know if therapy is right for me?
You don’t need to have all the answers before starting therapy. In fact, sometimes therapy begins simply because something doesn’t feel quite right, or because you’re curious about what you’re carrying and how it may be affecting you. Starting therapy can be an opportunity to slow down, explore, and become curious about the moments, experiences, thoughts, and feelings you may be holding.
You don’t need to know exactly where you’re going. That’s part of what we’re here for. As therapists, our role is to walk alongside you, helping you make sense of what you’re experiencing and navigate the process at a pace that feels right for you.
How often will I need to attend therapy?
There isn’t one right answer. The frequency of therapy is an individual preference, and your therapist will make recommendations based on your needs, goals, and what you’re experiencing. Many people begin with weekly or bi-weekly sessions and gradually reduce the frequency as therapy progresses and things begin to feel more manageable. We also recognize that life is busy. Work, family, relationships, and other responsibilities all matter. We respect your schedule and will work together to find a rhythm that feels supportive and sustainable for you.
Do you offer virtual therapy?
Yes. We offer virtual therapy throughout Ontario through secure video appointments using the JaneApp system. The link for the virtual session will be emailed to the account on file 30 minutes prior to your appointment time. Virtual therapy can offer the flexibility of connecting with your therapist from the comfort and privacy of your own space, wherever you are in Ontario.
Do you work with individuals, couples, and families?
Yes. We work with individuals, couples, and families, recognizing that every person and every relationship brings its own unique experiences and needs. You can learn more about our individual, couples, and family therapy services here.
Is everything I share confidential?
Yes. Creating a space where you feel safe to be open and yourself is an important part of therapy. Confidentiality is the right of every client, including children. Your therapist will talk with you about confidentiality and any limits to it so that you understand what to expect from the beginning.
What happens during a consultation?
A consultation is simply an opportunity to meet. It’s a chance for you and a therapist to get to know one another, talk about what brings you to therapy, and see whether it feels like we might be a good fit. You are never expected to share anything you’re not comfortable sharing. You can take this time to ask questions, learn more about your therapist’s approach, and talk about what therapy might look like.
There is no obligation to move forward after a consultation. Finding a therapist you feel comfortable with matters, and we want you to feel confident in your choice.
What happens during my first session?
Your first session is an initial intake appointment and is booked for 90 minutes. This gives you and your therapist time to slow down and begin getting to know one another. Your therapist will ask questions to better understand you, your family, your history, and what has brought you to therapy. This information helps us understand the bigger picture and how we can best support you.
As with every part of therapy, you are always in control of what you share. You can share what you’re comfortable sharing, at a pace that feels right for you. You will never be pressured to discuss something you aren’t ready for.
How long are therapy sessions?
Sessions can range from 50 to 80 minutes, depending on the type of support you’re looking for and what feels most appropriate for you. Your therapist can talk with you about the different options and help determine what length and frequency of sessions may work best for your needs.
Do you offer crisis or emergency services?
Holding Moments Psychotherapy is a private practice and does not provide crisis or emergency services. If you are experiencing an emergency or need immediate support, please visit your nearest emergency department or hospital.
Do you only serve residents of Port Hope, Ontario?
No. While Holding Moments Psychotherapy is located in Port Hope, our services extend beyond our local community. Our therapists are Registered Psychotherapists licensed under the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). VVirtual therapy can be provided anywhere in Ontario, while in-person therapy is available for those who are comfortable traveling to our office on Ontario Street in Port Hope.
How much do your services cost?
Fees vary depending on the type and length of appointment. You can find this information here.
Do I need to book an appointment?
Yes. Therapy sessions are offered by appointment only.
If you’re not sure where to begin, that’s okay. You can reach out to us to arrange a consultation, ask questions, or simply start a conversation about whether therapy might be right for you. You can find our contact information here.
Where are you located?
Holding Moments Psychotherapy is located at 249 Ontario Street, Suite 207, Port Hope, Ontario. We offer in-person therapy locally as well as virtual therapy throughout Ontario.
What can I expect from therapy?
Most importantly, you can expect to be met where you are. You don’t need to arrive with the right words, a clear plan, or all the answers. Therapy is a collaborative process, and we’ll work together to understand what you’re experiencing and what you hope to change, challenge, discover, and/or learn. Our hope is that therapy provides you with a space where you can feel heard, supported, and understood — a place to pause, reflect, and make room for whatever you’re holding.
What if I still have questions?
That’s completely okay. You don’t have to know exactly what to ask or where to begin. If there’s something you’re wondering about, we invite you to reach out. We’re happy to answer your questions and help you decide what the next step might look like. Sometimes, the first step is simply starting a conversation.
