Therapy for Anxiety

Anxiety is a natural human response to stress, uncertainty, or perceived danger.

In manageable amounts, anxiety can help us prepare for challenges and respond to situations that require our attention. At times, however, anxiety can become persistent, overwhelming, or difficult to control. It may begin to interfere with sleep, relationships, work, concentration, or your ability to enjoy everyday life.

Experiencing anxiety does not necessarily mean you have an anxiety disorder. Worry and nervousness are normal human experiences, particularly during periods of uncertainty or change. Therapy can be helpful when anxiety begins to feel difficult to manage or is getting in the way of the life you want to live.

Therapy can provide a space to understand what may be contributing to anxiety, recognize patterns of thinking and behavior, and develop healthier ways of responding to anxious thoughts and feelings.

You May Be Experiencing:

  • Excessive or persistent worry
  • Racing or intrusive thoughts
  • Overthinking or anticipating negative outcomes
  • Feeling restless or constantly “on edge”
  • Irritability
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Muscle tension
  • Fatigue
  • Difficulty relaxing
  • Changes in sleep
  • Rapid heartbeat or shortness of breath
  • Feeling overwhelmed
  • Avoiding situations because of fear or worry
  • Reassurance-seeking or repeatedly checking things
  • Panic attacks or sudden episodes of intense fear

Forms of Anxiety May Include:

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
  • Panic Disorder
  • Social Anxiety Disorder
  • Specific Phobias
  • Separation Anxiety
  • Health Anxiety
  • Anxiety associated with major life changes or stressful circumstances

Anxiety and Depression Can Co-Occur

Anxiety and depression are distinct experiences, but they can occur together. Persistent worry, fear, or feeling constantly on edge may occur alongside low mood, fatigue, loss of motivation, or withdrawal.

Therapy can help explore the full picture rather than focusing on one symptom in isolation.
