Understanding Depression

Depression is more than simply feeling sad or having a difficult day.

Depression can affect mood, motivation, energy, thoughts, relationships, sleep, concentration, and the ability to experience pleasure. At the same time, experiencing sadness, disappointment, low motivation, or a difficult period does not necessarily mean that someone has depression. These emotions are part of being human and can be understandable responses to difficult circumstances. Depression can develop gradually or occur following a significant loss, stressful period, relationship difficulties, or life change. Sometimes, however, there may not be an obvious reason why someone feels depressed.

When low mood or other symptoms become persistent, overwhelming, or begin interfering with everyday life, relationships, work, or the ability to enjoy things that once mattered, therapy may be helpful. Therapy can help you understand the patterns underlying depression, reconnect with your values and relationships, and gradually rebuild a sense of hope, motivation, and engagement with life.

Depression can also occur alongside anxiety, trauma, grief, chronic stress, or other concerns. You don’t need to have a formal diagnosis to seek support. If you’re feeling unlike yourself, struggling to function, or finding that your usual coping strategies aren’t enough, therapy can provide a place to begin.

Therapy can help explore the full picture rather than focusing on one symptom in isolation.
